Today, hundreds of professionals comb through the landscape looking for winners focusing exclusively on this category.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Given that construction represents roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.databasedanalysis.com\/global-construction-perspectives\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">13% of the world GDP<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and its p<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaccessgroup.com\/en-us\/construction\/resources\/construction-profit-margins-us\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">rofitability margins<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> fall somewhere within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procore.com\/library\/construction-markup-and-profit-margin\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">3<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Industries\/Capital%20Projects%20and%20Infrastructure\/Our%20Insights\/The%20next%20normal%20in%20construction\/The-next-normal-in-construction.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">5<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">% range (compared to other industries reporting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.stern.nyu.edu\/~adamodar\/New_Home_Page\/datacurrent.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">10-12<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">% on average), this acceleration is only the beginning. But lets dive more into the details of this industry\u2019s evolution over the past 5 years, which I would split into 2 periods:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19a2bd2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"19a2bd2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-685a1a22 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"685a1a22\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-468e3d68 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"468e3d68\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Clueless past (2015 \u2013 2021)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-22460057 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"22460057\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Around 2020, talking about ConTech with mainstream investors was tough. \u201cDomain experts\u201d were mostly asset managers who had only seen construction from a distance. The prevailing narrative (also amongst entrepreneurs) was still the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/business%20functions\/operations\/our%20insights\/reinventing%20construction%20through%20a%20productivity%20revolution\/mgi-reinventing-construction-executive-summary.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">McKinsey chart<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comparing construction productivity to that of fishing, and how it stagnated over the last decades while all other industries went through the roof (thanks to technology). I vividly remember that every pitch deck I saw around this time would mention how the proposed solution is \u201crevolutionizing\u201d this industry, \u201cdemocratizing\u201d a part of it and \u201cbringing construction into the 21st century\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of you might be surprised to learn that this lingo borrowed from other spaces does not resonate with industry professionals, only with investors learning themselves about the space (where such claims are required to land a deal).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We came a long way since then \u2013 today entrepreneurs understand that unlike in other industries, construction people usually are not looking for \u201cmagic pills\u201d in new solutions, but for something that will make their work easier, faster, or of better quality \u2013 not completely change the way they do things. In a high-risk and low-margin environment, no one wants to gamble, just improve the odds of success.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another distinction to the general venture-backed companies should be highlighted, as I believe the trend was already pretty clear around that time. Public exits like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procore.com\/press\/procore-announces-pricing-of-initial-public-offering\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Procore<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.bentley.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/bentley-systems-announces-pricing-initial-public-offering\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bentley Systems<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (and let\u2019s count the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/matterport-and-gores-holdings-vi-announce-closing-of-business-combination-301339532.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Matterport SPAC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as part of such examples) are rather the exception, than the norm in this category. Instead, M&amp;A has been the dominant exit strategy for most tech solutions (examples are abundant: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/en\/pressrelease\/autodesk-to-acquire-plangrid\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PlanGrid<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.autodesk.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/autodesk-acquire-buildingconnected-leading-construction-bid\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">BuildingConnected<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/en\/pressrelease\/autodesk-aquires-spacemaker\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Spacemaker<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procore.com\/press\/procore-acquires-construction-estimating-and-takeoff-company-esticom\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Esticom<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Objectively, the number of IPOs is much more pronounced in other industries. This might come as a surprise, because many finance professionals are familiar with studies showing that M&amp;A often destroys value. But surprisingly, though I couldn\u2019t find corresponding studies that would confirm this analysis specifically in a ConTech context (even though there is some great analysis around the topic of M&amp;A in construction, e.g. by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zacuaventures.com\/ma-in-construction-tech-part-i\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zacua Ventures<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), M&amp;A seems to be a significant value creator in ConTech. We might argue about the reasons, but it seems that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/strategy-and-corporate-finance\/our-insights\/what-programmatic-acquirers-do-differently\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">programmatic M&amp;A<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d in this industry is actually working and can expand coverage across the value chain and add tangible growth (and Autodesk is a good example of how this can be done).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-395bca87 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"395bca87\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50c82117 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"50c82117\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The VC Winter and the Reset (2022 \u2013 2024) <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-65eaee57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"65eaee57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Like all venture segments, ConTech endured the 2022\u20132023 downturn. Valuations fell, rounds froze, exits dried up. Even the M&amp;A slowed \u2014 apart from a few deals (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adsknews.autodesk.com\/en\/news\/autodesk-acquires-the-wild\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Wild<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.trimble.com\/2022-09-14-Trimble-Acquires-B2W-Software-to-Expand-its-Civil-Construction-Portfolio\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">B2W Software<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.trimble.com\/2023-01-24-Ryvit-to-Accelerate-and-Expand-Trimbles-Connected-Construction-Workflows\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ryvit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dedicated ConTech funds were cautious (being mostly smaller, many froze all talks and rounds to \u201chibernate and see what happens\u201d), so naturally, many founders sought out more generalist B2B software investors. This is for me the first time that I really felt a clash of the worlds when talking to those investors, many of whom didn\u2019t understand construction at all it seemed. Their valuations were based on reference to mainstream Software (like Microsoft), requiring Saas metrics not applicable to the project-based construction world. Even less did they appreciate the \u201cdouble Chasm\u201d that a ConTech supplier would need to cross (first landing a project with a customer, then expanding to other projects of the client, which in many cases is close in effort to onboarding a completely new customer since every project has a high level of autonomy and usually a different constellation of decision makers and budget holders). Not even to speak about the cash conversion cycle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By 2024, early-stage ConTech bounced back, and most specialised investors were again leading the deals. Like in most markets, Seed and Series A rounds found themselves at pre-\u201cVC winter\u201d levels, while later stages (C\/D) saw downward adjustments. This isn\u2019t surprising: early-stage rounds are usually about proving a product and go-to-market concept rather than showing scaling efficiency. Valuations in this space are more gut-driven, circumstantial and focus rather on \u201chow much money is needed to get to the next stage\u201d than actual perfromance metrics of the business. Later-stage investors on the other hand look for repeatability and margins. Many assumptions undelying the free cash flow projections needed to be revised versus the perhaps too rosy estimates in the pre-COVID, pre-war in Europe, and pre-tariff-fluctuation era.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e158824 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"2e158824\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39d126d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"39d126d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d5c653c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d5c653c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What matters and where we are at today? <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4e73980c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4e73980c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some outsiders still view construction as antiquated, change-resistant, and closed to innovation. Not the ideal industry to target as an entrepreneur. I would argue that these are also the very qualities that protected it from storms of \u201cfancy new trends\u201d in the last years and made it a no BS environment. Over the past years, many new technologies actually made it on site: Reality capture, robotics, augmented reality and some AI doc management solutions. But since it is harder to get the professionals\u2019 approval, only solutions that deliver tangible value to practitioners survive \u2014 funding alone and shiny demos are insufficient.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And now, that ConTech as a market has matured into a full-fledged category of its own, it\u2019s worthwhile to take a closer look at the individual sectors shaping its future.
