conveyors.<\/h2>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5bfd035 e-con e-atomic-element e-div-block-base e-5bfd035-80df630 \" data-id=\"5bfd035\" data-element_type=\"e-div-block\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-interaction-id=\"5bfd035\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-id=\"5bfd035\">\n    \t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"d72ea43\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"d72ea43\">Airport projects are demanding brownfield environments in constant flux. They grow like organisms, changing continually in response to fluctuations in passenger traffic. <br><br>The Baggage Handling System (BHS) is the backbone of an airport, as its ability to run unencumbered &amp; without interruption directly impacts the quality of the passenger experience &amp; ergonomic flow of airport operations. Due to this, any modification or addition to existing brownfield systems has proven exceedingly challenging given the limited working windows. Vanderlande engineers and builds these conveyors at airports worldwide. To improve their engineering design and delivery, Daniel Guevara and the Vanderlande team investigated GAMMA AR. The interview below highlights Daniel\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<h2 data-interaction-id=\"c1766c7\" class=\"H2-35 e-heading-base\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"c1766c7\">Establishing a BIM program for Large-Scale Brownfield Projects<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"f56bc4a\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"f56bc4a\">Daniel Guevara took on the task of \u201cestablishing a BIM program\u2026 for a large-scale brownfield project\u201d: leading the BIM effort as a prime contractor. There was no inherited playbook. As he puts it, \u201cstarting from square one is how we're going to approach this.\u201dThe team started with the standard procedures: walk the building site, find the obstruction, type it into a spreadsheet. But as Daniel found, to \u201cgo out and find stuff, manual inputs into Excel\u201d was \u201cnot going to be feasible for this scale of a project, especially when managing several subcontractors and tracking different things.\u201dDaniel made it his mission to \u201cdevelop a common langue that would ensure alignment across technical parties, PMO, &amp; site personnel.\u201d The use of clash detection in Navisworks in conjunction with clash mitigation in Autodesk Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud) gave the team the structure &amp; cadence it required to collaborate more effectively.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-interaction-id=\"0e328f0\" class=\"H2-35 e-heading-base\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"0e328f0\">Where 3D coordination meets site reality<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-a11a634-dc50bd8 e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"a11a634\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"a11a634\">Coordination in a 3D environment and coordination on a live airport floor are not the same exercise. Navisworks is the right solution to resolve geometry in a meeting; it is a demanding tool to navigate while standing under a conveyor with a tablet in one hand. Engineers able to \u201ctake drawings, take 3D models, go to a job site and be able to impose themselves: and see where this is going to go, what's in the way, and how it be fixed.&nbsp; However, for site personnel and others, it may not be as easy.\u201d That can require \u201clots of back and forth.\u201d and potential rework to remedy the shortcomings in communication.<br><br>The wasted resources and potential schedule impacts rendered from the \u201cback-and-forth\" are the real costs for the project. Engineering design completed away from site without reference to field conditions has proven to not have the level of accuracy required in brownfield conditions. Effective coordination in the 3D model must always be reflective of as-built conditions in order to ensure adequate clearances are allotted for impacted trades across the project<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-interaction-id=\"0d6fcf8\" class=\"g-a333c7b H2-35 e-heading-base\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"0d6fcf8\">Scans can\u2019t catch all obstacles<\/h2>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8415112 e-con e-atomic-element e-div-block-base e-8415112-a3741e9 \" data-id=\"8415112\" data-element_type=\"e-div-block\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-interaction-id=\"8415112\" data-e-type=\"e-div-block\" data-id=\"8415112\">\n    \t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-aeef864-bd490cd e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"aeef864\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"aeef864\">Navisworks remained the backbone: \u201cthe main technology to use was Navisworks, because that is our basis and our starting point.\u201d Issue tracking sits inside it, and a building scan lets the team \u201cpoint to scan objects and your equipment that you plan to install.\u201d<br><br>But scans can\u2019t catch every obstacle. They \u201ccapture the major stuff\u201d: duct work, major steel, four-inch conduits, while \u201clittle branch lines, drop rods, one-inch\u201d conduits never make it in, so they are not captured during 3D coordination. Yet small does not mean harmless: \u201cwhether there's a four-inch conduit or a one-inch conduit, if it's in the way, it's in the way.\u201d<br><br>This is where AR helps to ensure coordination directly on site. Comparing the scan against the model tells the team roughly where the problems are; walking the space with the model overlaid on it tells them what is actually there. \u201cNavisworks points you in the direction of your starting point, and then GAMMA helps you close that [final] 5, 10% of accurate coordination.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<h2 data-interaction-id=\"b9a3b7f\" class=\"g-a333c7b H2-35 e-heading-base\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"b9a3b7f\">Informed Engineering Decisions<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"f48d2ce\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"f48d2ce\">In a brownfield environment, a conveyor path matures in stages. \u201cIt starts with\u2026 an initial thought, a sketch, a 2D drawing. Then you model that into 3D and you impose it into Navisworks and you see, okay, I think this path will work.\u201d<br><br>The field visit used to be the moment of truth. Using AR it is a design step: \u201cthen you take it out into the field and you can impose your study model and then you can really start to capture every little [detail]: I'm seeing that these parts are in the way, we may have to coordinate X, Y, Z.\u201d With GAMMA AR, Daniel \u201cwas able to use it for our structural design for fine-tuning items,\u201d and he adds: \u201cI know this would be very helpful, not just for external coordination, but internal coordination.\u201d<br><br>In most projects a \u201chandful of engineers\u201d sit on the job site, \u201crelaying the information back from the site engineering team to the layout engineering team.\u201d AR documents the information required for design changes, referencing the actual model and its position in space. This way, a site engineer can show the layout team the \u201c3D models versus in the field\u201d: comparative images that support a design change rather than a request to trust a phone call. Designs get conveyed with more clarity to the site engineering team: \u201cHere's a picture of what this is going to look like if we put this\u201d here.<br><br>Feedback can also stay inside the tool. The fact that \u201cthere's nothing hitting these objects\u201d does not mean it can be installed. \u201cThat's a 10-foot or 12-foot piece of steel. Yes, it fits all the way up in that beam. But how do you get that in there?\u201d \u201cHow do you maneuver that thing in there and get someone in there to weld it? That's what's often missed and it takes a lot of time and precision to coordinate that.\u201d AR helps the team coordinate and visualize the installation directly on the spot.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 data-interaction-id=\"0d9224a\" class=\"g-a333c7b H2-35 e-heading-base\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"0d9224a\">The old workflow and the new one<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"Body e-paragraph-base\" data-interaction-id=\"2e3157b\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-id=\"2e3157b\">The previous routine was tablet, laser and pen: take the drawing of what the team planned to order, \u201ctake Bluebeam on the tablet, go out, take some measurements,\u201d point lasers, \u201cI can tweak it here and there, then making notes on Bluebeam.\u201d It worked, and the team still uses it, since the two approaches \u201cgo hand in hand.\u201d<br><br>With AR the same walk produces coordinated output.
