FAQ GAMMA AR
How may we assist you?
AR overlays digital elements like 3D models onto the real world, allowing users to interact with both digital and physical environments.
This makes AR ideal for on-site construction tasks, where workers can view BIM models directly on the jobsite.
VR, on the other hand, mainly used during the design and planning phases, creates a fully virtual environment, replacing the physical world.
Yes, GAMMA AR allows users to compare BIM models against the reality of the construction site.
This comparison helps detect deviations, identify issues, and ensure that construction is aligned with the planned model.
If discrepancies are found, users can flag issues within the app and sync them within their existing workflows, including platforms such as Procore, BIM360, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), bimCollab, and Revizto (see Question 16).
GAMMA AR enables real-time access to BIM models on the construction site, allowing field teams to compare designs to as-built conditions and report issues and progress immediately.
Any flagged discrepancies are synced with office teams, where they can be assigned, tracked, and resolved within the existing workflow (see Question 16).
This one-click communication loop helps bridge the gap between field and office, leading to faster decisions and fewer delays.
GAMMA AR helps reduce rework by allowing workers to visualize and verify construction elements in multiple stages: before they are built, during their assembly, and afterward to validate the construction.
By overlaying the BIM model onto the physical site, potential discrepancies are spotted early, preventing costly mistakes.
This ensures that construction is aligned with the design, reducing the need for rework and minimizing errors caused by miscommunication.
GAMMA AR is intuitive, requiring minimal training. Most teams can start using it with basic guidance on features such as aligning the model to the exact location on the job site and issue reporting.
For further support, GAMMA AR provides resources including video tutorials, documentation, and live demos.
When the model is positioned correctly, GAMMA AR offers high accuracy, especially right after alignment.
The accuracy of GAMMA AR depends on the precision of the initial positioning and the hardware used.
LiDAR-enabled devices such as the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro offer higher accuracy as they can snap models to existing edges on-site, reducing drift.
However, as you move further from the alignment point, small deviations can occur due to real-world construction tolerances and potential drift.
GAMMA AR is designed to be an indicative tool rather than a surveying device.
For quick checks, accuracy plays a minor role and is typically sufficient.
When higher precision is needed, it’s best to optimize alignment by using techniques such as corner alignments, QR code waypoint updates, or manual adjustments.
While perfect overlay might not always be achievable, GAMMA AR provides a highly accurate visualization when used as recommended.
Drift, the slight misalignment of the digital model as you move around the site, can accumulate over time due to factors such as lighting, environment, and the hardware in use.
GAMMA AR minimizes drift, especially with LiDAR-enabled devices that continuously track depth, but some drift may still occur in low-light conditions or large empty spaces.
To address drift, GAMMA AR offers several methods for realignment, each suited for different scenarios:
- Corner Alignment: This method is ideal for both initial positioning and updates. It aligns the model to specific corner points on the site, ensuring a close fit with the physical environment.
- QR Code Alignment: Also usable for both initial positioning and updates, this method uses QR codes placed on-site to quickly and accurately align the model to the correct location.
- Automatic Drift Correction: For positioning updates, GAMMA AR can automatically align the model to corners on LiDAR-enabled devices, providing a quick way to correct minor drift.
- Manual Drift Corrections: If small adjustments are needed, users can manually reposition the model by dragging it to the exact location via the help of on-screen guides.
By using these methods, users can maintain high accuracy and minimize drift, ensuring that the digital model remains closely aligned with the physical site throughout the project.
For optimal performance and accuracy, especially when working with larger or more complex models, we recommend using devices equipped with LiDAR technology, such as the iPad Pro (2020 or newer) and iPhone 12 Pro or newer.
These devices provide superior depth sensing, reducing drift and simplifying model positioning.
Even though GAMMA AR can run on older devices such as the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S10, which meet the minimum requirements of AR CORE support and at least 4 GB of RAM, they may not deliver the same level of performance when it comes to demanding environments.
GAMMA AR doesn’t require LiDAR for positioning and can function on older devices like the iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S10.
On these devices, the app relies on visual cues for positioning, which may require more frequent realignment.
While fully functional without LiDAR, the experience is enhanced on LiDAR-enabled devices such as the iPad Pro or iPhone 12 Pro, where positioning is more stable and adjustments are minimized.
While GAMMA AR doesn’t offer automated clash detection, it does help visualize and spot potential clashes by overlaying the model onto the physical job site.
On-site users can adjust the model’s transparency to see where elements should be located, comparing the design with what’s already built.
This real-time view ensures alignment with on-site conditions, helping detect conflicts between the BIM model and the actual construction.
Positioning a model in GAMMA AR is a quick process that can be completed in a few minutes.
You can either align on corners of building parts (e.g. Walls and Columns), where you select two reference points to anchor the model or scan a QR code to register the model’s position.
For more complex environments, the process may take slightly longer to ensure precision.
In such cases, additional steps might be called for to fine-tune the alignment, such as adjusting the model to fit around irregular surfaces or confirming multiple reference points for accuracy.
The app is designed for fast setup, yet achieving the highest level of precision in challenging settings might involve extra checks and minor adjustments.
However, these steps are streamlined to keep the process as efficient as possible, so you can start working with the model quickly without compromising on accuracy.
GAMMA AR offers multiple ways to correct misalignment, including aligning on corners, QR code realignment, manual adjustment, and automatic adjustment with LiDAR-enabled devices.
Regular realignment is recommended for complex environments.
The app’s user-friendly interface makes these corrections simple, allowing users to quickly resolve misalignments on-site.
GAMMA AR prioritizes data security by using industry-standard encryption to protect BIM models and reports.
The platform complies with data privacy regulations and integrates securely with major platforms such as Autodesk and Procore (see Question 16).
Regular updates ensure that any vulnerabilities are patched, keeping project data safe from unauthorized access.
While GAMMA AR is used offline once models are downloaded, an internet connection is required for initial setup, logging in, and downloading models.
After that, no continuous connectivity is needed, making the app ideal for construction sites with limited or no internet access.
Any issues or data collected during offline usage will sync automatically once you reconnect to the internet.
GAMMA AR supports the most widely used formats in construction and BIM projects, including Revit, and Navisworks, IFC files.
These can be uploaded directly from your local device or imported from Autodesk’s ACC or BIM360 CDE (Common Data Environment).
This flexibility ensures that your projects, regardless of platform, can be easily integrated into GAMMA AR.
GAMMA AR integrates with major construction platforms such as Autodesk ACC, BIM360, Revizto, Procore, and BIMCollab.
These integrations allow for smooth synchronization of models, issues, and project data, ensuring that updates in one platform are reflected in GAMMA AR.
Additionally, the open API feature enables custom integration with other systems, allowing for more personalized workflows and better interoperability.
GAMMA AR is designed to be an indicative tool rather than a full replacement for traditional surveying devices.
While it provides visualizations and helps detect issues early, it should not be considered a surveying tool for precision measurements.
GAMMA AR works best as a companion tool for helping to understand the design better and verifying that construction is on track while identifying potential discrepancies between the BIM model and construction/jobsite conditions.
While GAMMA AR can function in dimly lit environments, performance may degrade.
In such environments, the device may struggle to pick up enough visual cues to accurately track position, leading to drift.
LiDAR-equipped devices (e.g., iPad Pro) perform better in these conditions, as they use LiDAR for depth perception.
To maintain accuracy, we recommend providing sufficiently good lighting whenever possible.
Without LiDAR, drift can occur more quickly, particularly in poorly lit spaces or large open areas, so we advise frequent repositioning or the use of manual realignment tools, such as QR codes.
GAMMA AR does not support VR glasses or headsets like the HoloLens, Meta Quest, or Apple Vision Pro.
The focus of GAMMA AR is on handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets, which are more practical and safer for use in construction environments.
Additionally, these devices are widely used on sites and don’t require additional investment in specialized hardware.
